Title: Common
Type: 3D Animation
Description:
This 3D project has a grand concept: all the adults undergo a transformation of their bodies in order to adapt to their environments. People who require heavy use of their legs grow long legs, heavy laborers grow unusually strong arms, and workers who primarily use their brains grow extra large brains. I plan to make it a series in the future. At present, I have finished the entire world view construction and completed the modeling of the first story about a brain man, entitled “Common”. I will keep working to turn this project “Common” into an animated piece, and in the long run, complete the entire series.
This project begins by examining workplace commonness and competition. In this work, the heads of all brain workers have evolved into brains. The larger the brain they have, the higher status and better promotions they will receive. As a result, all the brain employees work to enlarge their brains even further. The main character is a brain man who is trapped in this strange circle of workplace comparisons. He ignores his own daughter and life outside of work. But after an accident during his brain enlargement experiment, he is forced to shift his mind from the anxieties of workplace pressure and finally re-focuses on the beauty of reality. Letting go of his burdens and excessive anxiety, the character enjoys the warm moments with his daughter in the clouds and replaces his brain with a simple cloud.
This work satirizes the rat race of modern workplaces. People are forced to compete with each other, regardless of if the competition is truly beneficial, and regardless of the costs of constant competition. Lost in unnecessary competition and office politics, many people lose their own identities, neglect their families, and miss the beauty around them.
With this work, I hope to express the value of acknowledging one’s uniqueness, and of spending time on what is worthy. At the same time, I hope to explore whether all uniqueness will eventually become homogenized. Just as after the character in the story exchanges his brain with a cloud, will there be people who blindly follow to change their heads into clouds as well? As I continue to create this series, I will explore different attitudes and endings for the characters and world.
