Title: Entangle
Type: Experimental Stop-motion Animation
Description:
This work, titled “Entangle”, is presented as an Experimental Stop-motion Animation. In this work, I experimented with iron wires and different textiles to build the mine, cave, and ore figures, used clay to make human characters, and used wood to create props such as the mine carts and the warning sign. The animation depicts the ores in a coal mine fighting against human beings to drive them out of their territory. In this piece, I aim to explore the theme of environmental preservation. When I interned at the Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival in Toronto, I watched a lot of documentaries on environmental issues, which in part inspired me to create animations about environmental protection. My hometown of Shanxi, China, is famous for its coal mining industry, which has led to large scale air pollution across the province. Using my background of growing up in Shanxi and my intern experience, I chose to probe the entanglement between humankind and nature. I explored ideas of nature revolting against humans, the entanglement of good and evil in human nature, and ideas of evil devouring good. With this animation, and in future work, I hope to bring people awareness of environmental issues, and inspire them to value and participate in environmental protection advocacy.
