Description:

“Another Shanghai’s Night” uses frame-by-frame techniques to tell a story of an ordinary person’s pursuit of dreams in old Shanghai during the Republican era. The animation specifically showcases the vast differences caused by the distorted class system of the time. The character of this work is an ordinary girl from the lower class, who works as a nanny for a well-known female star at a luxurious theater. At the same age, while the star sings and dances under the gorgeous lights, the heroine runs errands and cleaning in the dark. Even as she dreams of being on stage, the girl is powerless to change her reality. She does not dare to share her dreams with anyone. One day, the ordinary girl finds a radio. With music playing on the radio, she dances alone in her tiny room, imagining she is dancing on the fancy stage. In this brief moment, she finally gets to chase her dream. In the real world, many ordinary people like the character can only have small moments where their dreams come true. Through my work, I hope to give a voice to marginalized groups, especially marginalized women, in an effort to showcase their dreams and lives.
